Species extinctions under global change in the Nogués-Bravo Group

We investigate the complex interplay between genetic factors, biodiversity dynamics, global change, and the consequences of biodiversity loss on human health. Our goal is to deepen our understanding of species extinctions and their cascading effects, ultimately informing effective conservation strategies.

By integrating macrogenetics, macroecology, paleoecology, global change biology, and genomics, our interdisciplinary approach provides mechanistic insights into biodiversity changes, predicts future extinction risks, and assesses the implications for ecosystems and human well-being.

  • Biodiversity – We explore the forces shaping global patterns of genetic diversity and resilience across taxa, enabling us to predict future biodiversity changes in response to environmental shifts.
  • Extinction Pathways – We analyze the spatio-temporal dynamics and mechanisms driving biodiversity decline under climate change, from local extirpations to global extinctions during the Late Quaternary.
  • Future Lessons from the Past – By applying insights from past biodiversity changes, we inform contemporary conservation efforts, equipping societies with the knowledge to anticipate and mitigate the ongoing and future decline of nature.
  • Biodiversity and Human Health – We investigate how the loss of biodiversity impacts human health, from increased disease risks to disruptions in ecosystem services essential for well-being, highlighting the urgent need for conservation in safeguarding both nature and society.
